The Name of the Rose
What's in a name?
"Knomos" contains an obvious reference to the Ancient Greek word "nomos", which stands for "law" (hence, an application intended mainly for law firms), but also for "rule, organising principle" (see "astronomy").
On the other hand, "K" is the initial letter of Kanzlei, the development code name of the product, and the German word for "firm, office, chancery". "K" is also the initial letter of a great number of applications and utilities for Linux (the reference platform of Knomos), and of one of its leading graphical shells, KDE.
In turn, KDE stands for Kool Desktop Environment, and we obviously hope that be at least as Kool. But you happen to be instead a Gnome fan, it may be of interest for you to know that Knomos in Spanish means exactly... gnomes.
This, in turn, means in English "a fabled race of dwarflike creatures who live underground and guard treasure hoards". There we have again a good description of what what kind of performance we expect from the project.
