Knomos Mission

Knomos is an Open Source project for the management of the workflow and knowledge basis in law firms and other professional firms.

The project has been established and is managed by the London office of Studio Legale Sutti , an international law firm active in Italy and the Balkans, to overcome the limitations of the vertical software that is commercially available sofar. In fact, most of the relevant products are still monolithic, mono-language and mono-platform (i.e., Wintel) applications, based on obsolete client-server or file-server technologies, locking their users into proprietary environments, from the operating system up to data formats.

In addition, users of commercial products are not usually given access to the source code of the application they are using, so that they do not have any chance of knowing what the software is actually doing at any given time. This is of course detrimental to the legal and ethical obligation of security, reliability and confidentiality by which law firms and other professional firms are bound.

Knomos mission is that of providing instead a state-of-the-art, multi-platform, modular, server- and standard-based Open Source application which can be used by any professional firm in the daily performance of its tasks and in interfacing with its clients, consultants, correspondents and and suppliers.

Moreover, Knomos is designed having in mind compatibility with, and/or support for the implemention of:

ISO 9001-2000-based quality systems;
tariff-based billing methods, as an alternative to time sheets;
compliance with EU personal data-processing rules and Italian statutory minimum security measures applicable to the processing of personal data;
compliance with continental Europe Bar ethical rules;
Italian e-government civil trial procedures;
EU digital signature methods and rules;
compliance with Italian rules on safety in the workplace;
Italian tax and accounting legal provisions.
